DOK Artist Space was set up back in 2015 to provide an alternative affordable artist studio and exhibition space in a renovated ship building shed on the shores of Leith Docks. The project was driven by the lack of studio and exhibition afforded to young artists in the city that offered aspiring artists a community to work within to develop their practice.
This year, DOK faced the difficult situation of reconfiguring their organisation in the face of an independent business wishing to redevelop the very land DOK space made its foundations upon. With or without the steel shed DOK will continue as an organisation, offering pop-up events throughout the year, affirming their place in the Edinburgh arts scene.
We spoke to Livvy Turner (founder of DOK Artist Space) and asked her what 5 pieces of information she would give to artists whom wish to participate or open up their own arts organisation. Here are her answers...
- Artists run organisations are becoming extremely diminished in the city. Edinburgh more than ever now needs new spaces and studios to pop up. If you are thinking of setting up an artist space I would say now is great time as the demand is extremely high.
- Research before hand to find out exactly what you would like to achieve. Sometimes the initial starting up can take longer than expected but do not get dishearten, this is when you will learn the most and ensure you have not missed anything.
- It is a great way to start a artist community, meet new artists and longtime friends.Extremely rewarded and invaluable experience.
- Start with a core team who you can divide up responsibilities to. Some aspects can become extremely time consuming so it is important you have support and everyone is clear on their roles.
- You need to be passionate about the arts, have a strong drive and most of all you need to be prepared to graft.
